A Scenic Stop Above the Mississippi River
As we continued exploring historic French fort sites along the Mississippi River, we made our way to Fort Kaskaskia State Historic Site.
This stop is very different from others in the area. Instead of a large, reconstructed fort, what you’ll find here is a quiet hilltop setting with incredible views overlooking the river. You will find the berms and built up of the ground where the fort once stood.
What Is Fort Kaskaskia State Historic Site?
Fort Kaskaskia was originally built by the French in the 18th century as part of their efforts to control the Illinois Country.
Like many early forts along the Mississippi River, the original structure was made of wood and no longer stands today.
What remains is the historic location itself, which still holds importance for:
- Early French colonial history
- Military movements along the Mississippi River
- The shifting control between French, British, and American forces
The Overlook and River Views
The highlight of visiting Fort Kaskaskia today is the view.
From the top of the bluff, you can look out over the Mississippi River and the surrounding countryside for miles. It’s easy to see why this location was chosen—it offered a strategic vantage point over the river.
It’s a peaceful place to stop, take in the scenery, and reflect on the history tied to the area.
The Liberty Bell of the West
One of the most interesting features at the site is the Liberty Bell of the West.
This bell was originally cast in 1741 for a church in nearby Kaskaskia. It later became a symbol of American victory when it was rung to celebrate the capture of the area during the Revolutionary War.
Today, it sits in a small memorial building at the site and is worth taking a few minutes to see.
Our Visit to Fort Kaskaskia
When we arrived, we found a quiet and uncrowded area—very different from some of the larger historic sites.
There’s a parking area close to the overlook, and it’s just a short walk to take in the views.
While there isn’t a full fort to walk through like at Fort de Chartres State Historic Site, the setting itself makes this stop worthwhile.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Easy access with nearby parking
- Short walk to overlook

A Different Kind of Historic Site
Fort Kaskaskia may not have standing structures, but it offers something just as valuable—a sense of place.
Between the history and the sweeping views of the Mississippi River, it’s a stop that pairs perfectly with other nearby sites.
