Exploring Ste. Geneviève, Missouri: A Historic French Colonial Town on the Mississippi River
Discovering a French Colonial Village
When we visited Ste. Geneviève, we found ourselves strolling through one of the most unique historic towns in the United States.
This charming and laid-back town is known as the last remaining French Colonial village in the country. As you walk through downtown, you’ll find inviting shops filled with antiques, crafts, gifts, sweets, and local wine.
Located along the west bank of the Mississippi River, Ste. Geneviève offers a mix of history and small-town charm that makes it a great place to slow down and explore.
What Is Ste. Geneviève?
Ste. Geneviève was founded around 1735 by French-Canadian settlers, making it the oldest permanent European settlement in Missouri.
It was also the first organized European settlement west of the Mississippi River in what is now Missouri.
The town was named after Saint Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris, France.
Many of the early families had already lived in the Illinois Country for generations before settling here, bringing their French traditions and architecture with them.
Walking Through Historic Downtown
The historic district sits right in the center of town and is where you’ll find many of the preserved buildings that make Ste. Geneviève so special.
As you walk through the area, you can:
- Visit historic homes and structures
- Explore local shops and small businesses
- Learn about the town’s early French roots
There is also a historic park where you can spend time learning more about the town’s past and how it developed over the years.
A Blend of French and German Heritage
While Ste. Geneviève began as a French settlement, German immigrants later moved into the area, adding another layer to the town’s culture.
Today, that mix of heritage is still visible and celebrated through:
- Local festivals
- Cultural events
- Food and traditions
This blend of influences gives the town a unique feel you don’t find in many other places.
A Relaxing Stop Along the River
We really enjoyed the time we were able to spend here, even though it was a short visit.
This is the kind of place where you could easily spend a full weekend exploring, especially if you enjoy history, architecture, and small-town charm.
Nearby History Across the River
One unique part of visiting Ste. Geneviève is the ability to cross the river into Illinois.
There is a ferry nearby that will take you across the Mississippi River, where you can visit Fort de Chartres—a historic French fort located just a short drive up the river.
A Great Weekend Getaway
Ste. Geneviève is a great destination for a relaxing trip.
Whether you’re interested in early American history, French colonial architecture, or just looking for a quiet place to explore, this town offers a little bit of everything.
