In this Old Folks Adventures – On the Trail road trip, we visited Bardstown, Kentucky — known as the Bourbon Capital of the World. With 11 unique distilleries within 16 miles of Court Square, Bardstown is a dream destination for bourbon lovers.
But we quickly discovered there is much more to Bardstown than bourbon.
Nearly 200 historic buildings line the walkable downtown, and the town has even been declared “The Most Beautiful Small Town in America.” We were only there for a weekend — and it wasn’t nearly enough time to see everything.
Staying at The Old Talbott Tavern & Talbott Inn
During our visit, we stayed at the historic Talbott Inn, located right in the heart of downtown Bardstown.
The Old Talbott Tavern was originally built in 1779 and is considered the oldest western stagecoach stop in America. The Inn sits next to the Tavern and has expanded over the years.
One thing we quickly learned — checking in can be a little confusing! There are actually two places to check in:
-
One desk next to the Tavern
-
Another inside the brick building behind it
Once we got settled, we realized we couldn’t have picked a better location. Everything downtown is within walking distance.
Downtown Bardstown – Walkable, Historic, and Full of Life
In the center of Court Square stands the Old Courthouse, which now serves as the Bardstown and Nelson County Visitor Center. Even at night, the square is beautifully lit and welcoming.
As we walked through downtown, we noticed something impressive — almost every storefront was occupied. Maybe one or two spaces were empty, but overall, the town felt alive and thriving.
Shops, pubs, restaurants, and small businesses line not only the main street but also the side streets and back lanes. If you visit, don’t just stay on the main drag. Wander the side streets — that’s where you’ll often find hidden gems.
Parking is limited on the main street, but there are public lots just one block over, making it easy to explore on foot.
Mayor’s Park – A Perfect Rest Stop
Near the end of the shopping district is Mayor’s Park, named in honor of Bardstown’s past mayors.
It was the perfect place for us to sit, relax, and take a break before heading back through town. Sometimes those small green spaces are what make a downtown feel welcoming.
Not too bad for two old folks on their first big trip after 41 years of work behind us.
More Than Bourbon – Museums, History, and Local Charm
While Bardstown is famous for the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, it offers much more than distillery tours.
We spent time visiting four museums during our weekend and could have easily filled another day or two exploring more. The town has a deep connection to early American and Civil War history, and that heritage shows throughout the area.
For us, Bardstown felt like what Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg used to feel like years ago — before the large-scale attractions. It’s a place where you walk, explore, enjoy local music at pubs, and take in the countryside at a slower pace.
Riding the My Old Kentucky Dinner Train
The main reason we visited Bardstown was to ride the My Old Kentucky Dinner Train — and it did not disappoint. We enjoyed a great meal and a relaxing ride through the Kentucky countryside.
We’ll be sharing that full experience in our next post, Riding the Old Kentucky Dinner Train.
Why Bardstown Is Worth a Weekend Getaway
Even though we only had a weekend, Bardstown surprised us. Between the historic downtown, bourbon heritage, museums, and small-town atmosphere, there is plenty to explore.
And we still didn’t see it all.
That just means there may be another adventure back to Bardstown in our future.
