A Scenic Drive to Bald Knob Cross of Peace
We wanted to explore more of the western side of Shawnee National Forest, and this stop had been on our list for a while. After hearing about the cross and the views from the top, we decided to make the drive and see it for ourselves.
The trip took us through the rolling hills of southern Illinois, part of the foothills connected to the Ozark region. It turned into one of those drives that is just as enjoyable as the destination.
What Is Bald Knob Cross of Peace?
The Bald Knob Cross of Peace is a massive white cross that stands 111 feet tall on one of the highest points in southern Illinois.
Sitting at over 1,000 feet above sea level, the cross overlooks miles of forest and countryside. When it’s lit up at night, it can be seen from a huge distance across the region.
It sits next to the Bald Knob Wilderness area, adding to the peaceful and natural setting that surrounds it.
The Drive and First Impressions
Getting there is part of the experience.
The road winds through hills, trees, and open views, and as you get closer, you’ll start to catch glimpses of the cross rising above everything else.
By the time you reach the top, you realize just how high up you are.
Views from the Top
Standing at the base of the cross, you get a wide, open view over the Shawnee National Forest and the surrounding countryside.
On a clear day, you can see for miles in every direction.
It’s one of those places where you just stop for a few minutes, take it all in, and enjoy the quiet.
Events and Visiting Experience
The people who care for the cross were very friendly and welcoming when we visited.
They host events throughout the year, including:
- Easter sunrise services
- Blessing of the bikes
- Seasonal gatherings
It’s more than just a viewpoint—it’s a place that brings people together.
Things to Know Before You Go
- The drive includes winding roads and hills
- Views are best on clear days
- Limited winter hours at the welcome center
