Hiking Pomona Natural Bridge in Shawnee National Forest – A Short Scenic Adventure

A Quick Stop at Pomona Natural Bridge

Pomona Natural Bridge is a short but rewarding hike in the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. What started as a simple stop turned into a bit of an adventure when our GPS struggled with the backroads—but that’s all part of the fun.

The trail itself is only about a half-mile loop, making it a great place for a quick hike and a relaxing picnic stop along the way.

Finding the Trailhead

Getting to Pomona Natural Bridge can be a little tricky. The final stretch is a gravel road with some steep grades, which may be difficult for smaller cars depending on conditions.

It actually took us longer to find the trailhead than it did to hike the trail—but sometimes those unexpected moments make the trip more memorable.

The Hiking Trail Experience

The loop trail is approximately ½ mile long and winds through a mature oak-hickory and beech forest.

Along the way, you’ll experience:

  • A mix of gravel, dirt, and rocky terrain
  • Some mild inclines
  • A peaceful forest setting

The highlight of the trail is walking across the natural bridge itself before looping back to the parking area.

There’s also a bench along the trail where you can stop, rest, and take in the scenery.

Walking Across the Natural Bridge

One of the most unique parts of this hike is the chance to walk across the top of the natural rock formation.

The surface can be uneven and slippery—especially after rain—so sturdy, non-slip shoes are highly recommended.

Take your time here and enjoy the view. It’s a simple but memorable experience.

Picnic Area and Relaxing Stop

After finishing the short hike, we took advantage of the nearby picnic area to enjoy lunch.

This makes Pomona Natural Bridge a perfect stop if you’re exploring the Shawnee National Forest and want a quick hike without committing to a long trail.
