On the Trail at Hemlock Cliffs – Hiking a Hidden Canyon in Southern Indiana
Tucked away inside the Hoosier National Forest, Hemlock Cliffs is one of the most unique hiking areas in southern Indiana. This beautiful box canyon is known for its cool microclimate, towering sandstone cliffs, seasonal waterfalls, and rare plant life that you normally wouldn’t expect to find in this part of the Midwest.
The canyon’s sandstone formations create deep overhangs, rock shelters, and narrow ravines that hold moisture and shade throughout the year. Because of this environment, plants like eastern hemlock, wintergreen, wild geranium, and mountain laurel thrive here. The result is a peaceful natural setting that feels very different from the surrounding forest.
Hemlock Cliffs is truly one of those places where you can slow down, enjoy nature, and discover something new around every bend in the trail.
What we found while hiking the Cliffs
We first visited Hemlock Cliffs in the fall of 2014 while exploring different parts of southern Indiana. A one-mile hiking trail leads you down into the canyon, and the walk itself is part of the experience.
As we made our way down the trail, the cool air and the smell of fallen leaves reminded us why fall is one of our favorite seasons for hiking. The deeper we walked into the canyon, the more impressive the rock formations became.
Massive sandstone cliffs rise along the sides of the canyon, with rock overhangs and shelters carved out over centuries by wind and water. Many of the rock walls are “honeycombed,” a pattern created by weathering of iron-rich sandstone that gives the cliffs a unique texture.
Along the trail you’ll also find small springs, seasonal waterfalls, and even small caves formed by the underlying limestone layers. These natural features help create the cool and damp environment that supports the unusual plant life found here.
Because we visited during the fall, we didn’t get to see many of the wildflowers that bloom earlier in the year. But even without them, the scenery was still incredible. The cliffs, rock formations, and quiet forest made the entire hike feel like stepping into another world.
Of course, there is one thing about hiking down into a canyon that everyone eventually realizes…
You have to hike back up.
By the time we reached the truck again, both of us agreed that maybe we needed to do a little more walking and get ourselves into better hiking shape!
Even though it was a short hike, Hemlock Cliffs turned out to be a beautiful and memorable stop during our travels through southern Indiana.
