Buzzard Roost Overlook – A Scenic Stop Along the Ohio River in Southern Indiana

Buzzard Roost Overlook – A Scenic Stop Along the Ohio River

Buzzard Roost is a scenic bluff overlooking the Ohio River and is located just off the alternate route of the Ohio River Scenic Byway. Many travelers exploring this famous 967-mile driving route take a short detour to experience the view from the cliffs.

The drive into Buzzard Roost is part of the adventure. After turning off the main road, the route quickly narrows into what feels like a single-lane country road winding through thick forest. When we visited during the fall season, the drive was especially beautiful with bright autumn colors lining the road and leaves covering the ground beneath the tall hardwood trees.

When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised to find a small primitive campground tucked quietly into the woods near the overlook. The area felt peaceful and remote, making it a great stop for travelers looking to relax and take in the scenery along the river.

Hiking the Buzzard Roost Trail

The trail begins at the bluff overlooking the Ohio River. From there, the path drops down and winds through a hardwood forest before climbing again toward a rocky stream that flows toward the river below.

Along the trail you’ll encounter:

  • Large sandstone outcrops

  • Small seasonal waterfalls

  • Several small caves and rock formations

  • Quiet forest scenery

The trail is approximately 0.8 miles (1.3 km) long and can be steep in places, especially near the bluff.

Because we arrived late in the afternoon and daylight was starting to fade, we didn’t have time to hike the entire trail. Even so, the short time we spent exploring the overlook and surrounding area made the stop worthwhile.
