German Apple Cake (Apfelkuchen) – Traditional Old-World Dessert
If you enjoy old-fashioned desserts that bring simple ingredients together into something special, this German Apple Cake (Apfelkuchen) is a recipe worth trying. Made with fresh apples baked into a soft, buttery cake, this traditional German dessert has been enjoyed for generations and is perfect for family gatherings, coffee time, or a cozy evening treat.
This recipe is surprisingly easy to make and turns out incredibly delicious. If you’d like to add a little extra flavor, you can sprinkle a sugar and cinnamon mixture over the top before baking or brush the cake with apricot jam once it comes out of the oven. Apple jelly would also be a fun variation to try.
Apfelkuchen is wonderful served just as it is, but you can also dress it up with vanilla sauce, a scoop of ice cream, or a drizzle of caramel sauce for an extra indulgent dessert.

German Apple Cake (Apfelkuchen) – Traditional Old-World Dessert

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lbs sweet-tart apples
- 1 Tbs lemon juice
- 2 cups all- purpose flour
- 3 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 14 Tbs unsalted butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 3 Tbs milk
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 pk Vanillezucker or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- preheat oven to 350F
- butter a 10-to-11-inch springform pan or a pan with a removeable bottom
- Peel the apples and remove the core then dice/slice (not to thick)
- place the apples in a bowl of cold water with lemon juice. set aside until the batter is ready
- in a small bowl combine the flour, baking powder, and salt
- in a large bowl beat the butter, sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until pale and creamy
- beat the eggs in one at a time mixing thoroughly before adding the next egg
- stir in the flour mixture until combined but do not over stir
- pour apples into a colander and let them dry set aside a few for press into the top
- stir the apples pieces into the batter and scoop the batter into the greased pan
- place the apples you set aside onto the top of the batter.
- bake in the oven for 40-55 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
- let cool for 15 minutes and remove from the pan.
- Sprinkle the top with powdered sugar. You can also use a sugar & cinnamon mixture or apricot jam for toppings. If you choose to use sugar & cinnamon or jam, add it to the cake while hot and then let it cool.
