The Rise and Fall of the “Kay-Gee” Iron Empire: The Keck-Gonnerman Story

In the early industrial era, a small Mount Vernon, Indiana, blacksmith shop grew into one of the most important manufacturers in the Midwestern grain belt.

The Keck-Gonnerman Company—better known by its “Kay-Gee” trademark—built steam traction engines, threshing machines, sawmills, and other heavy equipment used across North American farms and industries. At its height, the company was the largest employer in its region. Its machines were known for their strength, careful construction, and ability to keep working under demanding conditions.

But the same qualities that made Kay-Gee equipment respected also made the company vulnerable. As farming moved toward lighter tractors, mass production, and self-propelled combines, Keck-Gonnerman struggled to change with the times. Its large Fourth Street factory finally closed in the 1950s, although the company’s original foundry survived for decades longer.

From a Second Street Foundry to a Regional Manufacturer

The company’s story began close to downtown Mount Vernon, near the Ohio River.

The Second Street Foundry

In 1873, John C. Woody and Winfield Woody established a small blacksmithing, machining, and casting business near Second Street. Locally, the operation became known as the Mount Vernon Foundry or the Staples Foundry.

John Keck joined the firm in 1877. In the beginning, the business handled small foundry jobs, machinery work, and agricultural repairs. After Woody retired in 1880, the company passed through several short-lived partnerships, including a period when it operated as Keck & Onk.

The business changed direction after the Gonnerman family became involved. The Gonnermans were German immigrant mechanics who had settled in the region and brought considerable mechanical skill to the partnership.

By 1884, the new firm was operating as Keck, Gonnerman & Company. That same year, it produced its first manufactured steam engine and threshing separator. The partnership combined the Keck family’s business leadership with the Gonnermans’ mechanical and foundry expertise.

Building the Fourth Street Plant

The company officially incorporated in 1901. As demand grew for large agricultural machines, the original downtown location no longer offered enough room for the expanding manufacturing operation.

Keck-Gonnerman built a roughly 10-acre industrial complex along West Fourth Street. The new plant provided space for heavy engine assemblies and offered better access to regional rail lines.

At its peak, the Mount Vernon plant employed between 200 and 300 workers. The company’s workforce was unusual compared with the assembly-line operations developing in larger eastern manufacturing centers. About 85 percent of its employees were highly skilled tradesmen rather than assembly-line laborers.

That concentration of experience shaped the company’s products. Keck-Gonnerman engines were known for careful balance, smooth friction clutches, and heavy-duty internal gearing. Many were built one machine at a time by workers who understood both the materials and the work their equipment would perform.

How the Fourth Street Factory Worked

At its industrial peak, the West Fourth Street plant operated as a vertically integrated manufacturing system. Much of the work needed to build a machine took place within the factory complex.

The Pattern Shop and Foundry

The process began in the pattern shop, where workers carved wooden patterns for engine components. These patterns were pressed into specialized sand molds on the foundry floor. Molten iron was then poured to create engine blocks, flywheels, gears, and other heavy parts.

The Machine Shops

After the castings cooled, they moved to the machine shops. Skilled machinists used large lathes, drills, and planers to shape the parts and bring them to the necessary working tolerances.

Assembly and Testing

Steam engines and threshing separators were assembled on large central floors. Teams of tradesmen fitted boilers, gears, frames, and steering mechanisms by hand.

Completed engines were then taken to an open-air testing yard. There, workers connected them to a water source and friction brakes and ran them under load. The testing process helped confirm boiler pressure, mechanical balance, and overall operation before shipment.

Rail Connections

The factory’s connection to local railway lines was especially important. Large traction engines and threshing equipment could be moved to loading docks and placed directly onto flatcars for shipment throughout the United States and into Canada.

More Than Farm Machinery

Keck-Gonnerman became best known for agricultural equipment, but its work extended well beyond threshing machines and steam engines.

At its height, the company maintained branches in St. Louis, Missouri; Peoria, Illinois; and Edmonton, Alberta. Kay-Gee threshers were exported to Cuba for rice production.

As grain combining developed, the Mount Vernon company manufactured thresher bodies that smaller manufacturers converted into soybean combines in Michigan and rice combines in California.

During the early 1940s, Keck-Gonnerman distributed Allis-Chalmers farm implements and the Ann Arbor baler—the first successful self-tying baler—to dealerships in Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Kentucky. The Mount Vernon plant also built thousands of Kay-Gee straw walkers and straw spreaders for use with combines.

The company entered the mining-machinery business in 1904. Its employees also made parts for and repaired marine equipment used along the Ohio River. Before large numbers of boat-building and boat-servicing facilities were established along the river, inland water transportation companies relied on Mount Vernon’s machine shops for specialized work.

For several years, Keck-Gonnerman even worked on a tungnut picker or gatherer for tungnut plantations in the South.

The Families Behind the Company

Keck-Gonnerman’s success rested on the contributions of two families: the Kecks and the Gonnermans. Each family brought a different kind of expertise to the company.

John and Louis H. Keck

John Keck entered the business in 1877, after the original Woody partnership had been established. He helped guide the company’s transition from a small local foundry into a manufacturer of large agricultural machines.

Keck recognized that farmers in the growing American heartland needed mobile power for threshing, timber sawing, and other demanding work. He also helped direct the expansion of the company’s foundries and manufacturing facilities.

Louis H. Keck served as one of the company’s principal executives. His work focused on the commercial side of the business, including the dealer and distribution network that carried Kay-Gee products beyond Indiana and into the American West and Canada.

William and Louis Gonnerman

William “Wm” Gonnerman was a trained German mechanic who brought foundry and mechanical knowledge to the company. He was closely associated with the engineering and design of Kay-Gee steam traction engines, which were built for strength, balance, and long service.

Louis Gonnerman worked with William in the engineering departments and oversaw pattern-making and casting operations. His responsibilities included ensuring that the metal parts produced at Mount Vernon could withstand the pressure and hard use expected of early twentieth-century farm machinery.

Together, the two families created a company that depended less on mass production than on the skill of its tradesmen.

Why the Kay-Gee Empire Declined

Keck-Gonnerman did not disappear because of one sudden disaster. Its decline unfolded over several decades as the machinery market changed around it.

1. Heavy Iron in a Gasoline Age

As steam power began to fade, Keck-Gonnerman tried to move into internal-combustion equipment. Beginning in 1917, the company developed kerosene- and gasoline-powered tractors.

Its four-cylinder Kay-Gee line, introduced in 1928, included the large Model 30-60 powered by LeRoi engines. These tractors were durable and heavily built, but their size limited their usefulness. Weighing as much as 10,000 pounds, they were well suited to stationary belt work, such as powering sawmills and threshing rigs. They were less practical for the lighter, more flexible fieldwork demanded by modern farming.

2. Competition from Mass Production

During the late 1920s and early 1930s, companies such as John Deere and International Harvester introduced lighter, versatile, mass-produced tractors. Models such as the Farmall offered farmers more general-purpose utility at a lower cost.

Keck-Gonnerman’s low-volume, hand-built production system could not compete easily on either price or flexibility. Only about 200 of the company’s flagship 30-60 tractors were built, making the model unusual but not commercially competitive with the high-volume products of the larger manufacturers.

3. The Great Depression

The Great Depression sharply reduced the purchasing power of independent farmers. Many customers could not afford new machinery, while Keck-Gonnerman faced the high costs of producing large, specialized equipment.

In 1937, the company ended tractor production.

4. War, Changing Markets, and the Postwar Nosedive

Keck-Gonnerman continued for another decade and a half by returning to equipment it knew well. The company made threshing separators, steel combines, sawmills, and other machinery, while also filling export orders.

World War II restricted access to raw materials and limited domestic development. After the war, self-propelled combine harvesters rapidly replaced standalone threshing machines. The market that had supported Keck-Gonnerman for much of its history was disappearing.

The company was sold in 1953 and permanently closed by 1955, ending 82 years of major industrial activity.

The Second Street Foundry Survived

The closure of the large Fourth Street agricultural plant did not end Mount Vernon’s foundry story.

The original Mount Vernon Foundry on Second Street operated separately from the tractor and agricultural-machinery enterprise. Long after the Kay-Gee boilers cooled, the Second Street operation continued serving local and regional customers.

It produced small components, custom iron parts, and job-shop work. The foundry continued employing local craftsmen and pouring iron well into the 1980s, preserving a connection to Mount Vernon’s nineteenth-century manufacturing history long after the larger company had disappeared.

Living History: Machinery That Still Runs

Keck-Gonnerman machinery remains visible at antique-engine shows, threshing reunions, and preservation events. Many Kay-Gee engines were built with heavy materials and careful workmanship, and surviving examples continue to attract collectors and restorers.

  • Keck-Gonnerman Antique Machinery Association: Based in Mount Vernon, Indiana, this local preservation association works to keep the company’s hometown legacy alive. Its activities include exhibitions, the collection of factory literature, and maintaining information about surviving machines and serial numbers.   • Boonville Antique Steam & Gas Engine Club: At Thresherman Park in nearby Boonville, Indiana, the club features antique steam engines and gas tractors at its annual shows. Demonstrations may include sawmill and threshing work.
  • National Threshers Association: The annual reunion at the Fulton County Fairgrounds in Ohio brings together collectors and operating steam traction engines. Kay-Gonnerman engines are among the machines that may appear in demonstrations of belt work and plowing.

Where Surviving Machines Can Be Seen

Restored Kay-Gee steam engines can also appear at major heritage gatherings such as the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion in Iowa and the Tuckahoe Steam and Gas Engine Show in Maryland.

The rare Model 30-60 tractors are especially prized by collectors. With only about 200 reportedly built, surviving examples are uncommon and are generally found in museums or private collections in the Midwest and Western Canada.

A Useful Lesson in Industrial History

The Keck-Gonnerman story is both a success story and a cautionary one.

The company grew because it understood the needs of its customers and employed people with the skills to build dependable machinery. Its engines helped farmers thresh grain, power sawmills, and bring mechanical power to places far beyond Mount Vernon.

But dependable construction alone could not protect the company from a changing industry. Lighter tractors, mass production, new harvesting technology, wartime restrictions, and the shift to self-propelled combines all weakened the market for Kay-Gee equipment.

The factory closed, but the machines did not simply vanish. Preserved engines still run at shows, collectors continue to search for rare tractors, and local groups keep the company’s records and memory alive.

When a Kay-Gee engine starts today, its exhaust and steady mechanical rhythm offer more than a glimpse of old machinery. They connect present-day visitors with the workers, farmers, machinists, and families who helped build Mount Vernon’s industrial past.
