Description

Set high above the Tennessee River in western Kentucky, Fort Heiman preserves the remains of a Confederate earthwork built to help defend nearby Fort Henry during the Civil War. The fort was named for Colonel Adolf Heiman, a German-born Confederate officer and engineer. When Union forces captured Fort Henry in February 1862, Confederate troops abandoned Fort Heiman, and Union forces occupied the position soon afterward. Today, the site forms part of Fort Donelson National Battlefield and Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. Its quiet setting, surviving earthworks, and broad river views offer a chance to consider the opening Union campaigns in the western theater. Fort Heiman is best suited to visitors interested in military history, historic landscapes, and less-developed sites connected with the Civil War.
