Description
The George Rogers Clark National Historical Park commemorates one of the most significant victories of the American Revolutionary War west of the Appalachian Mountains. The impressive memorial marks the site where George Rogers Clark captured Fort Sackville from British forces on February 25, 1779, securing the Illinois Country for the United States and helping establish American claims to the Northwest Territory. Dedicated in 1936 and designed by architect Frederick Hirons, the monumental memorial is one of the largest outside Washington, D.C. Its circular granite structure features sixteen massive Doric columns surrounding a domed memorial hall. Inside, visitors are greeted by seven murals painted by Ezra Winter, depicting Clark's remarkable winter campaign from Kaskaskia to Vincennes and the surrender of Fort Sackville. At the center stands a heroic bronze statue of George Rogers Clark created by renowned sculptor Hermon Atkins MacNeil. (nps.gov)

The memorial overlooks the Wabash River near the site of the original British fort, allowing visitors to appreciate the strategic importance of Vincennes during the Revolutionary War. Exhibits inside the visitor center explain Clark's difficult 180-mile winter march across flooded prairies, the multinational frontier of the Illinois Country, and the campaign's lasting influence on the creation of the United States. Ranger programs, interpretive films, and educational exhibits further explore the military, political, and cultural history of the Old Northwest.

Today, the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park is one of Indiana's premier historic sites. It provides visitors with an outstanding introduction to the Revolutionary War in the West and the frontier events that laid the foundation for the future states of Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, and parts of Minnesota.
