Description

Near Cleveland, Tennessee, Red Clay State Historic Park preserves the final seat of the Cherokee national government in the East before the forced removal known as the Trail of Tears. Cherokee leaders gathered here for important council meetings in the late 1830s, making this quiet wooded site an essential stop for understanding Cherokee history and the events that preceded removal. Visitors can take in the grounds, see the council-house site and Blue Hole spring, and explore exhibits that place Red Clay within the larger story of the Cherokee people.
