Description

This memorial recalls the African American soldiers of the United States Colored Troops who served the Union during the Civil War and the deadly Simpsonville Massacre of January 1865. Members of the 5th United States Colored Cavalry were escorting cattle through the area when they were attacked by Confederate guerrillas; at least 22 Black Union soldiers were killed.
