Description

The Site of Ranger, Indiana marks the location of a small but once-active rural community in northern Perry County. Although little remains of the original settlement today, Ranger played an important role in serving the surrounding farming community during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The community developed around a local crossroads and was best known for its post office, which was established in 1866. For an extraordinary 73 years, the post office was operated by members of the same family, becoming a familiar gathering place where residents picked up mail, shared local news, and stayed connected with the outside world. Like many small rural communities across Indiana, Ranger never grew into a large town, but it provided essential services for nearby farms and families for generations. The post office remained in operation until 1956, when improved transportation and rural mail delivery made many small post offices unnecessary.

Today, the site serves as a reminder of the many small communities that once dotted Indiana's countryside. While most of Ranger has disappeared, its story reflects the importance of rural post offices, local commerce, and close-knit neighborhoods that formed the backbone of life in Perry County.
