Hiking Indian Point Trail in Shawnee National Forest – Garden of the Gods Area Loop

 Our Hike on Indian Point

I went hiking with my son, and we spent the day exploring the Indian Point Loop Trail in southern Illinois.

This trail is located near the famous Garden of the Gods area inside Shawnee National Forest.

It was a cool spring hike, but still incredibly beautiful. The cliffs, forest views, and overlooks made it well worth the trip.

 What Is Indian Point Trail?

Indian Point Trail is a moderate 1.8 to 2-mile loop hike known for:

  • Blufftop overlooks
  • Rock formations and cliff views
  • Quiet pine forest sections
  • Spring wildflowers (seasonal)
  • Less crowded alternative to Observation Trail

It also connects with the larger River to River Trail system, and includes primitive camping areas along the route.

 Trail Overview

  • Distance: 1.8–2 mile loop
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Terrain: Rocky, uneven, wooded, bluff edges
  • Features: Multiple overlooks, forest sections, base-of-cliff hiking
  • Camping: Primitive sites available along loop

 Starting the Hike

From the parking area, the main trail begins as a wide path that gradually climbs uphill.

Near the start, the River to River Trail also passes through this area, heading east and west.

About halfway up the hill, the trail splits:

  • Right fork: More direct and commonly used route
  • Left fork: Less traveled, narrower, and more rugged

We chose the left fork first.

 Walking the Rim

The left path took us along the edge of the cliffs with fewer hikers and a more natural feel.

Along this section:

  • Fallen trees occasionally crossed the trail
  • Pine trees lined portions of the ridge
  • Several primitive camping spots appeared along the way
  • The cliff overlooks opened up wide views of the valley

With the leaves not fully in yet, the views stretched for miles across the landscape.

 Base of the Cliffs Section

As the trail descended, it reached another split:

  • Left: Returns more directly toward the parking area
  • Right: Follows the base of the cliffs

We took the right path along the base.

This section offers a very different experience—walking beneath towering rock formations while the cliffs rise above you. The terrain becomes rocky and uneven, requiring more attention to footing.

This is not a section where you can walk quickly. It’s more of a slow, careful hike with constant changing views above and around you.

 Reaching Indian Point

Eventually, the trail begins to climb again toward the main overlook.

At the top, we reached Indian Point itself.

From here, you get nearly a 300-degree view over the surrounding valley and forest. It’s one of the best viewpoints on the trail, and a great place to stop and rest.

We spent some time here just taking in the scenery before heading back.

 Returning to the Trailhead

From Indian Point, the trail reconnects with the main route that most hikers use to reach the overlook.

This return route is easier and more direct, which is why many hikers choose it both ways. However, taking the longer loop adds significantly more scenery and variety.

What to Know Before You Go

  • Trails can be uneven and rocky
  • Steep drop-offs exist along cliff edges
  • Wear proper hiking shoes
  • Bring water, especially in warmer months
  • Take your time—some sections require careful footing

 Final Thoughts

Indian Point Trail is a great hike if you’re already visiting the Garden of the Gods area.

It offers a quieter alternative to the main overlook trail and gives you a mix of forest, cliffs, and wide-open views.

For us, it was one of those hikes that felt peaceful, scenic, and just the right level of challenge.
