Garden of the Gods Outpost – A Relaxing Place to Eat in Shawnee National Forest, Southern Illinois

If you are visiting Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois, finding a place to relax and grab something to eat after hiking can make the trip even better. During our travels through the area, one of the places we have stopped several times is Garden of the Gods Outpost.

Located near several of the area’s best-known attractions, the Outpost is a convenient stop for travelers exploring:

  • Garden of the Gods Recreation Area
  • Rim Rock National Recreation Trail
  • Pounds Hollow Recreation Area
  • and many of the hiking trails throughout Shawnee National Forest

Location & Atmosphere

Garden of the Gods Outpost sits at the corner of Karbers Ridge Road and Garden of the Gods Road, making it an easy stop while traveling through this section of southern Illinois.

The building is designed to resemble an old frontier trading post, which fits perfectly with the wooded setting of Shawnee National Forest. Inside, visitors will find a small but relaxing atmosphere with sandwiches, ice cream, sodas, snacks, and a variety of Bigfoot-themed souvenirs.

The Outpost also carries books and locally made items connected to the region, which adds to the local southern Illinois feel of the stop.

Outside, there is a gravel parking area that can become crowded during peak tourism seasons, especially during weekends and the fall color season when Shawnee National Forest is at its busiest.

What We Ordered

Most of the time when we stop at the Outpost, we will either grab some ice cream or order a chili cheese dog while taking a break from hiking and exploring the area.

This is not a fancy restaurant experience, but that honestly is part of the appeal.

The food is simple, filling, and exactly the kind of quick meal or snack many travelers are looking for after spending time on the trails.

The service has always been friendly during our visits, and it has become one of those places we naturally stop at whenever we are in the area.

Our Experience

One of the things we enjoy most about Garden of the Gods Outpost is the relaxed atmosphere.

After spending hours hiking scenic trails and overlooks, it is nice finding a place where you can simply sit down, cool off, and slow the pace for a little while.

The Outpost feels more like an old roadside stop from another era rather than a modern fast-food restaurant. Between the forest setting, rustic design, and unique souvenirs, it adds character to the overall Shawnee National Forest experience.

During busy tourism seasons, especially fall weekends, the area can become crowded with hikers, travelers, and motorcycle traffic. Even with the crowds, it still feels like part of the adventure of visiting southern Illinois.
