Description

On the eastern edge of Evansville, Angel Mounds State Historic Site preserves one of the most important archaeological landscapes in the Midwest. The site was home to a large Mississippian-period community that flourished along the Ohio River roughly 1,000 years ago, leaving behind earthen mounds, village areas, and traces of a carefully organized settlement. Visitors can explore the grounds, walk among the mounds, and learn more through the site's museum and interpretive exhibits. The story here is larger than the earthworks themselves: Angel Mounds offers a thoughtful introduction to the Indigenous peoples who shaped this region long before Evansville was founded, as well as to the archaeology and preservation work that continues today.
