Description

The Dearborn County Historical Society is the primary repository for the history of Dearborn County, preserving the stories, artifacts, photographs, documents, and genealogy of one of Indiana's oldest counties. Located in the historic Vance-Tousey House in downtown Lawrenceburg, the society offers visitors an opportunity to explore the people and events that shaped southeastern Indiana from the territorial period through the modern era.

The headquarters itself is part of the experience. Built around 1818 by Samuel C. Vance, the founder of Lawrenceburg, the Vance-Tousey House is one of the city's oldest surviving homes and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Federal-style residence has been carefully preserved and now serves as both a museum and research center, where visitors can browse historical exhibits, photographs, manuscripts, newspapers, maps, and family records.

In addition to preserving documents, the Historical Society maintains several important historic properties, including the 1819 Angevine Cabin, one of the oldest surviving log structures in Dearborn County. Through guided tours, educational programs, genealogy assistance, and special events, the society helps bring to life the county's rich heritage of Ohio River commerce, early settlement, agriculture, railroads, industry, and community life.
