Description

Near Smithland in western Kentucky, Mantle Rock Nature Preserve brings together a striking natural landmark and a deeply important Trail of Tears site. A wooded trail leads to the large sandstone arch, where Cherokee travelers camped during their forced removal west in the winter of 1838–1839.

The preserve is a meaningful place to walk, reflect, and learn about the Cherokee experience alongside the landscape that sheltered them. Visitors should approach the site with care and respect: Mantle Rock is both a natural area and a place of remembrance connected to one of the most painful chapters in American history.
