Description

In the quiet countryside near Underwood, Pigeon Roost Memorial State Historic Site recalls one of Indiana’s most tragic frontier episodes. On September 3, 1812, an attack on the Pigeon Roost settlement resulted in the deaths of 24 settlers, including women and children, during the unsettled years of the War of 1812.

The site is a place for reflection rather than a large reconstructed attraction. Its memorial and historical setting invite visitors to consider the fear, uncertainty, and violence experienced by both settlers and Native peoples as frontier communities expanded.
