Description

The Museum of the Coal Industry preserves the story of the men, women, and communities that helped build southwestern Indiana through coal mining. Located in Lynnville, Indiana, the museum celebrates the rich mining heritage of Warrick County and the surrounding coalfields, where generations of miners worked to supply the fuel that powered homes, railroads, factories, and industries across the Midwest. Founded in 1985, the museum sits on beautifully reclaimed mining land and is dedicated to preserving this important chapter of Indiana history.

Inside the museum, visitors will find an extensive collection of mining artifacts, photographs, equipment, tools, safety gear, documents, and memorabilia that illustrate how coal mining evolved over the decades. Interactive exhibits explain mining techniques, the daily lives of miners, and the challenges they faced underground. The museum's knowledgeable volunteers and guides add personal stories that bring the exhibits to life.

The grounds are just as impressive as the indoor exhibits. Visitors can explore a reconstructed Company House and Company Store, providing a glimpse into everyday life in the mining communities of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Outside, you'll also find the restored "Tinker Bell," a 1940 EMD SW1 diesel switcher locomotive that worked at the Peabody Lynnville Mine from 1968 until 1999, along with large pieces of mining machinery and additional displays spread throughout the property.
