Exploring Newburgh, Indiana – A Historic Ohio River Town Along the Scenic Byway

Our Visit to Newburgh

We took a trip to Newburgh, a historic town sitting along the Ohio River just off the Ohio River Scenic Byway.

When my wife and I were younger, the drive from Evansville to Newburgh followed quiet two-lane highways through open countryside. Over the years, much of that route has changed as the east side of Evansville continued to grow. Many of the old rural views have been replaced by new development, and the roads themselves have widened into busy four- and six-lane highways.

Even with those changes, Newburgh still holds onto much of its historic river town feel once you reach the downtown area.

History of Newburgh, Indiana

The area around Newburgh has a long history of human settlement stretching back thousands of years.

Nearby Angel Mounds State Historic Site was once a major settlement of the Mississippian culture between approximately 1000 AD and 1400 AD.

By the mid-1800s, Newburgh had grown into one of the busiest river ports between Cincinnati and New Orleans. The town became an important shipping and trade center along the Ohio River.

Newburgh is also known for the Newburgh Raid during the American Civil War, when Confederate forces briefly captured the town. It is remembered as the first town north of the Mason–Dixon Line to be captured by Confederate troops during the war.

Walking the Riverfront

We started our visit at the riverfront park before making our way along the walking path beside the river.

As we walked through town, we noticed several signs with QR codes that allow visitors to view historical images and learn what parts of Newburgh once looked like in its earlier years. It was interesting being able to compare the modern streets with the historic photographs.

One thing that surprised us was how active the downtown area still is today. Many of the old buildings are still standing and continue to be used by local businesses, restaurants, and shops. Seeing these historic buildings preserved and still serving the community gives the town a much different feeling than many modern downtown areas.

There are also several places where you can sit, eat, and enjoy views of the Ohio River while watching people walk the riverfront pathway.

Historic Downtown Feel

One of the things we enjoyed most about Newburgh was how walkable the historic district is.

The downtown area is compact enough that you can easily park once and spend time exploring on foot. Between the historic storefronts, river views, and older homes nearby, the town still carries much of the atmosphere of a traditional Ohio River community.

It feels like a place where history and modern life still blend together naturally.

Final Thoughts

Newburgh is a nice place to slow down and spend a few hours exploring along the Ohio River.

Between the historic buildings, riverfront walkways, and connections to both early settlement and Civil War history, the town offers much more than just a quick stop along the road.

For us, it was enjoyable seeing how much of the old river town atmosphere still remains despite the growth happening around it.
