Cape Girardeau Riverfront Park – Mississippi River Views, History & Walking Trails

Our Visit

As we wrapped up our time in Cape Girardeau, we made one last stop along the riverfront to walk through Riverfront Park.

It was a great way to slow down at the end of the trip. The park sits right along the Mississippi River, and there’s quite a bit to see as you walk the paths.

About Riverfront Park

Riverfront Park is a 1.5-acre park located along the Mississippi River in Cape Girardeau.

The park features:

  • A terraced seating area with an amphitheater-style layout
  • Walking and biking paths along the river
  • Docking access for riverboats and paddleboats
  • Direct views of the Mississippi River

The park sits on the river side of the flood wall, which means it may not be accessible during periods of high water.

Just across the flood wall, you’ll also find a series of murals that highlight local history and add another layer to the experience of visiting this area.

Walking the Riverfront

One of the most interesting things we saw while walking the park was the remains of the old bridge that once crossed the Mississippi River into Illinois.

While the bridge itself is gone, parts of the structure still remain, giving you a sense of what once stood here and how important this crossing was.

As we continued along the path, we came across a sign marking what is believed to be one of the oldest beech trees in Missouri—estimated to be over 200 years old.

There are also several historical markers throughout the park. One that stood out to us highlighted the history of St. Vincent’s Seminary, which later became part of Southeast Missouri State University.

Historic Surroundings

Beyond the park itself, the surrounding area adds even more to the experience.

As you walk along the riverfront, you can see older homes nearby with architectural styles that reflect a different time. It’s a nice reminder of how long this area has been part of the city’s history.
