Gerst Bavarian Haus in Evansville Indiana – A German Restaurant Along the Ohio River Scenic Byway
If you are visiting Evansville or traveling along the Ohio River Scenic Byway, finding a memorable local restaurant can make the trip even better. One of our favorite places to stop and eat in Evansville is Gerst Bavarian Haus.
Known for its German food, historic atmosphere, and large portions, Gerst Bavarian Haus has become one of the restaurants we return to several times throughout the year.
Location & Atmosphere
Gerst Bavarian Haus is located on West Franklin Street just west of downtown Evansville and only a short drive from the Ohio River Scenic Byway.
One of the first things you notice about the restaurant is the historic building itself. The restaurant is housed inside what was once a large hardware store, and much of the original character of the building has been preserved. The exposed wood, older architecture, and historic feel give the restaurant an atmosphere that stands out from many modern chain restaurants.
The restaurant offers both indoor seating and an outdoor patio area depending on the weather and season. Inside, there is also a separated bar area that can become very busy during the evening hours and weekends.
West Franklin Street is known locally for its restaurants, bars, and nightlife, so parking can sometimes take a few extra minutes during peak dining hours. The area itself has a lively atmosphere, especially later in the evening.
What We Ordered
We have eaten at Gerst Bavarian Haus many times over the years and have tried a large variety of items from the menu.
So far, we honestly have not had a bad meal here.
The restaurant is known for serving large portions along with traditional German-inspired meals, sandwiches, and comfort food favorites. The serving sizes are generous enough that many visitors may even leave with leftovers.
One of the things we enjoy most is that the menu has enough variety that it still feels worth coming back multiple times throughout the year.
Our Experience
Our experiences at Gerst Bavarian Haus have consistently been positive.
During the daytime hours, the restaurant tends to feel more relaxed and slower paced, making it a comfortable place to sit down and enjoy a meal without feeling rushed.
Evening hours and weekends are usually much busier. At popular times, there may be a waiting list before being seated, and the overall pace of the restaurant becomes more energetic. Despite the crowds, the atmosphere still feels welcoming and enjoyable.
