Mashed potatoes are a classic side dish that goes with just about any main course. Whether you’re serving pork chops, roast beef, chicken, or meatloaf, old-fashioned creamy mashed potatoes always complete the meal.

There are many different ways to make mashed potatoes, but this is the simple, reliable way I make them for my family.

Simple Ingredients, Classic Flavor

Good mashed potatoes don’t need complicated ingredients. A few simple basics come together to create that creamy texture and buttery flavor everyone loves.

The key is:

  • Cooking the potatoes until fork-tender

  • Draining them well

  • Mashing while hot

You can adjust the milk to make them thicker or creamier, depending on how your family likes them.

Tips for Creamy Mashed Potatoes

  • Don’t overmix – This can make potatoes gummy.

  • Warm your milk and butter before adding to keep them smooth.

  • Salt to taste after mashing.

  • If they seem too thick, just add a little more warm milk.

Simple adjustments make all the difference.
