Description

At the center of Mount Vernon, Indiana, Posey County Courthouse Square is anchored by a handsome red-brick courthouse built between 1874 and 1876. The building’s design is chiefly Italianate, with arched windows, decorative brackets, and projecting gabled pavilions framing the central block. Look up toward the domed roof and lantern for details that show the building’s Second Empire influence, including segmental pediments and a mansard-roofed lantern. The courthouse and surrounding square offer a memorable glimpse of Posey County’s civic history and Mount Vernon’s historic downtown.
