Description

The Reitz Home Museum is one of Evansville's finest historic treasures and one of the best-preserved examples of French Second Empire architecture in the Midwest. Completed in 1871 for lumber baron and civic leader John Augustus Reitz, the elegant mansion showcases the prosperity that the lumber industry brought to Evansville during the late nineteenth century.

Today, visitors can step inside and experience the home much as the Reitz family did more than 150 years ago. Guided tours lead guests through beautifully furnished rooms featuring hand-painted ceilings, carved walnut woodwork, imported marble fireplaces, stained and etched glass windows, original gas chandeliers converted to electricity, and decorative details that reflect the craftsmanship of the Victorian era. Many of the home's original furnishings, artwork, and personal belongings remain on display, giving visitors an authentic glimpse into life during Evansville's Gilded Age.

Located within the Riverside Historic District, the museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been designated a National Historic Landmark, recognizing its outstanding architectural significance and remarkable state of preservation. Beyond its beautiful rooms, the Reitz Home tells the story of Evansville's rapid growth as a center of river commerce, manufacturing, and the hardwood lumber industry along the Ohio River.
